In laser hair removal, a concentrated beam of light (laser) is used to remove unwanted hair. It takes days to weeks for the hair to fall out, so there is no need to be concerned when it doesn’t happen immediately. It may appear as if the hair is growing continuously. Due to hair growth and loss naturally occurring in cycles, laser treatment is most effective when hair follicles are in the new-growth stage. To catch hair at the appropriate time during the cycle repeated treatments can be necessary.
It is difficult to predict the results because they vary significantly. Typically, hair removal lasts for several months, and it can last for many years. There is no guarantee that laser hair removal will permanently remove hair. The hair that regrows is usually finer and lighter in color. For long-term hair reduction, you may need maintenance laser treatments.
To reduce unwanted hair, laser hair removal can be a highly effective option. Bikini lines, upper lip, legs, and armpits are common locations for treatment. Almost anywhere, except the eyelid or surrounding area, can be treated for unwanted hair. It is also not recommended to treat skin with tattoos.
A laser hair removal treatment’s success is influenced by the color of the hair and the type of skin. The pigment of the hair is intended to absorb the light, rather than the pigment of the skin which is why certain skin and hair types are more receptive of this treatment than others. Therefore, contrasting hair and skin colors – dark hair and light skin – produce the best results.
Although laser hair removal is riskier when there is little contrast between hair color and skin color, advances in laser technology have made it possible for people with darker skin to undergo laser hair removal. For hair colors that don’t absorb light well, such as gray, red, blond, and white, laser hair removal is less effective. Despite this, laser treatment options for light-colored hair continue to evolve.
Whether or not you are a good candidate for this procedure will be determined during a consultation at True Bliss Medical. In general, most individuals looking to remove unwanted hair on a permanent or semi-permanent basis can benefit from laser hair removal. Thanks to the advancements in laser hair removal technology, it benefits individuals of many skin and hair types.
Laser hair removal involves the emission of light to be absorbed by melanin, which is the pigment in the hair. As a result, the light energy is converted into heat, which damages the tube-shaped sacs within the skin (hair follicles) that produce hair. Future hair growth is inhibited or delayed because of the damage caused by the procedure.
Even though laser hair removal can delay hair growth for long periods, it does not usually permanently remove hair. Initially, multiple laser hair removal treatments are necessary, and maintenance treatments may also be necessary. All skin types can benefit from laser hair removal, but people with light skin and dark hair have the best results.
Two to six laser hair removal treatments are typically required to see complete results. Depending on the location, the interval between treatments will vary. It may be necessary to repeat the treatment every four to eight weeks in areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip. The treatment might be repeated every 12 to 16 weeks on areas of slow hair growth, such as the back. In case the site needs to be shaved again, an assistant might do so. During treatment, your doctor may apply a topical anesthetic to your skin to reduce discomfort.
